We all know that Richard Ph.D. Garfield has always been very kind when it comes to sign your cards. If you are lucky enough to meet him once, he’ll be always up for some signing and, if you are brave enough, maybe some alterations.

Sorry for the offtopic here but, today while searching for some images I managed to find this awesome Pentavus illustration ala M.C. Escher style, and couldn’t resist sharing it.

I’m a huge huge fan of M.C. Escher since my early days at the Architecture University. I’ve always reproduced his impossible illusions myself in order to find out the geometry of his art. Mixing Magic: The Gathering with M.C. Escher in one image really made my day!

Whoever did it, coz I haven’t found out yet, deserves my special mention for his/her excellent photoshop skills!

I know this issue of the price of some Legacy staples has been discussed enough over The Source and other forums on the net. So, I’m not gonna give you my opinion here but instead I’ll show the latest vignette from Pro MTG Online, the ultimate self-aware Magic strategy web comic, that updates itself.

I just love what the Good Gamery guys can do!

Once you reach a certain age, the concept of winning might be different than it was 10-15 years ago. I’m 100% sure I’m gonna win GP Madrid, in many different levels. Let’s have a look at what winning would be depending on your age.

When I was 16-19 year old, my “win” concept was:

Reaching day 2 at the GP main event.
Playing a metagame deck (rogue style)
Get those white borders dual lands I’m missing to complete a certain deck.
Get my junky commons signed by the artists attending.
Eating my mum’s sandwhich, who made it with tones of love in order to wish me luck
Saturday’s night party takes place at the hotel, with cheap vodka and a nameless “cola”. Your hangover is the only thing you will remember from that night.
Travelling for 100€ including bus and hotel/hostel.

When I was 20-25 year old, my “win” concept was:

Winning a GPT in order to start with some byes and increase the chances of making day 2 and fight for the money.
Playing the best deck of the moment. You copy/paste from pro’s on the internet and no longer from ink-printed magazines.
Get those FBB dual lands I’m missing to complete a certain deck.
Get your playable rares and playmat signed by the artists attending. I would buy something from them to seem nicer.
Finding a good Kebab/McDonnalds/Burger King nearby to eat.
Saturday’s night party takes place at cheap bars and later at the wrong disco. The ugly girls at the disco is all you will remember from that night.
Travelling with your friends by car, find a nice 2 star hotel and share 2 rooms.

When you are my age, soon 30, teh win concept is:

Finding the Side Events board to see when the Vintage events are starting.
Real men play combo, and you love it.
Get those beta duals and foil jap fetches from your usual dealers.
Queueing less than 3 hours and getting all your beta/foil japanese playable cards signed and altered. You also want the artists alter your playmat. Instead of buying their art like younger noobs do, you give them a 50€ bill straight away so you don’t have to worry about that piece of paper all day.
Finding a Michelin graded restaurant in the area to enjoy a good meal. If you are doing well at the main event, who cares? You drop and go score a good meal.
Saturday’s night party takes place at the most glamorous places. First a good cocktail in some chick lounge and then some champagne at the best club in town. You’ll remember hardly anything, but then your friends will find out you did crazy stuff! No hangover, indeed.
Travelling by car/bus or cheap train ain’t an option. You want to be there fast and comfortable, and that’s why you go by plain or high-speed train. You want the hotel to be at least 3 stars and no longer share beds.

No matter how old you are, remember:

Random thoughts: Perish

Last Sunday I went to play this GPT for Madrid with my (not so) budget Affinity deck. From the decklist I ran, there’s one card I’m really satisfied with: Perish.

I’m not sure whether or not is the right time to include Perish maindeck. With the uprising hype of Bant decks packing Natural Order / Progenitus, Tarmogoyf, Noble Hierarch, Qasali Pridemage, etc… I believe it’s the time to step forward and be ahead of the metagame.

If you hate Tarmagoyf as much as I do and would love to annihilate them all, Grand Prix Madrid would be the perfect scenario. Some random numbers I can come up with from my metagame predictions:

GP Madrid attendance (based on nothing xD) = 2000 players
Average of decks running x4 Tarmogoyf = 70% (Healthy format my ass!)

With those two numbers, you can come up with one idea: THERE’S GONNA BE A LOT OF GOYFS! exactly:

70% of 2000 players = 1400 times 4 = 5600 Tarmogoyf all together in less than 10000 m2.

Now imagine just casting a RL® Perish! OMG, you would make Legacy a healthy format in a matter of seconds!

Last Sunday I had the chance of making 2×1’s and 3×1’s thanks to Perish. Man, that retaliation feeling you got once you see your opponent (with tears in his eyes) placing those hordes of green creatures (I miss you Grizzly Bears!) in his graveyard is just PRICELESS!!!!!

[Offtopic]: Report del Top3 en el torneo de poker del Casino de Perelada. By ImPEACHment

Se que a muchos de vosotros os apasiona el poker y es por eso que me permito el lujo de compartir con vosotros el report que mi hermano, Xavi, aka ImPEACHment, se ha currado de su Top3 Split en el pasado torneo de poker celebrado en el Casino de Perelada.

Sin más dilación os dejo con el report:

Con JJ (como mejor mano en toda la noche y sin llevarla al show down, claro) se puede ganar un torneo de poker, os lo aseguro! Este martes (12) me desplacé hasta Peralada con Rodman (aka “MEGA RANGO” xD) para jugar el Petit Hold’em, torneo de 90+10€ de buy-in con ciegas de 25′ y, en este caso, un total de 30 jugadores (habitualmente oscila entre 25 y 50). Se trata de un torneo bastante peculiar en el que se mezclan franceses, catalanes, regulares y fishes (básicamente casi todos los perfiles menos…los pro’s).

Tras registrarnos (también otro amigo de Calella, Marc) y comprobar que habría 30 jugadores, tocaba empezar a jugar y estudiar la mesa (coincido con Marc, él asiento 2 y yo asiento 6). Un gordo enfadado, un francés tatuado, un joven nervioso y un abuelo…(siempre se agradece tener un abuelo en la mesa…te obliga a estar atento y constantemente te haces preguntas como…”sabrá jugar?”, “tendrá 200k en Stars y me la clavará cuando le resuba con mi AJs?”, “sabe que existe internet?”…y básicamente…”qué coño hace aquí un tío de 80 años que no parece estar disfrutando?”).

En mi caso, y sobre el abuelo…la primera mano relevante es un AdTd (d=diamantes) que limpeo con la SB(small blind) completando y el ABUELO checkeando. FLOP 7xx (2 diamantes): él check, yo apuesto y callea, TURN A (más que probable que tenga dobles de A7 y me haya dado un check-call raro en el flop): él apuesta (MUY POCO) y yo pago esperando un diez (“T” para los no habituados con el argot) o un diamante que me daría color máximo. el RIVER: es un diamante que despejará bastantes de las dudas que te suele generar el abuelo de la mesa. Él apuesta otra vez, que para eso ha venido, yo enchufo la caja y da INSTA CALL con A7. Ergo, es un “tío” majo que no tiene nada mejor que hacer un martes por la noche. Paso de mis 3k iniciales a unos 5k.

Luego toca el chaval nervioso…yo con TT (dieces) resubo a 5BB (3BB + 1 por cada limper…como dicen los libros). El chaval nervioso enchufa unas 5 veces mi apuesta (yo metí 300 [por tanto ciegas 30-60] y él los 1500 puntos que le quedaban). Tras mucho pensar…debo foldear…y pienso….si enseño que soy capaz de foldear TT y es (medio) subnormal igual me enseñará su cañonaco, y además la mesa verá que estoy jugando para ganar. Le fecilicito por el raise, enseño…y tachaaaan…ASES del colega…nice fold!

Luego toca…Marc, mi AMIGO. Yo As4s limpeo desde el botón con 1 limper y Marc en la BB que completa. FLOP A25: o sea que buenas y malas noticias (top pair, gutshot…y un kicker que deprime a cualquiera). Yo meto unos 500 y Marc paga. TURN A:…con lo que se cumple lo del “way ahead/way behind”. Hay bastantes manos que me ganan ahora y sólo gano de goleada a los parejones tipo KK QQ, que no deberían pagar una apuesta fuerte en el river. ÉL CHECK…YO CHECK…coño, que somos amigos (de momento)!!. RIVER

bendito…cae un 4 que me da un full de los que no entienden de amigos Enchufo 1500 (bet pot) y callea con AT…que obviamente me estaba pegando una paliza hasta la 5ª. Me pongo en unas 7.000 fichas.

Nuestra mesa se rompe y ale…como si se tratase del primer día de curso, a hacer amigos nuevos! Destacable…que a mi izquierda tengo el chip lider del torneo sentado. Todo lo demás se resume en una mesa ultra light con raise-fold preflop el 95% de las manos (las otras 5% foldeaban ante la clásica C-BET). Yo me metí en muy pocos jaleos…di un call a un short con KQs (un short y con tan poca gente creía que podía funcionar) y pierdo vs AJ dicho call ( .

Luego una Sra. con unas 7 ciegas limpea UTG y yo con mis dieces (TT) resubo 4 BB, me mete el resto y…está claro lleva un Ax….obviamente pago y muestra AK (arg!!). Pierdo la carrera y me quedo con unos míseros 4’5k puntos con los que entro en la mesa final.

Asiento 2…puta mierda de sitio, no veo las fichas ni del 8 ni del 9!!. El chip lider sigue siendo el que estaba a mi izquierda, ahora un poco más lejos pero mantiene la posición sobre mi…y más amigos nuevos.

IMPORTANTE….a todo esto, hemos hablado de (2 veces) TT y nada más, mis mejores manos han chocado contra AA y vs AK que me gana la carrera. OK…!!

En la mesa final sigue la tónica de raise-fold con alguna novedad…el RR (re-raise) y el SQUEEZE (que provoca una sensación similar a meter un triple en el último segundo desde…tu casa!!). AK, AQ, y JJ me sirvieron para robar algunos botes y subir hasta las 7k fichas otra vez. Luego un A9 que aguantó hasta el SD (show down) y un 2c5c con flop 5XcXc con el que hice un check-raise fino

A todo esto…cobran los 6 primeros en teoría…pero cuando quedamos 7 pactamos sacar 100€ del bote para el que sea 7º (bubble boy). Ya estoy contento, pero veo que pueeeeeedeeee ser que sea el mejor jugador de la mesa y que tenga edge suficiente como para ir a por los 9xx € del primer puesto, especialmente por la MIERDACA de cartas que me habían tirado.

Trepo hasta las 30k fichas y cuando quedamos 3 (todos entre 25 y 30k) nos dan un break en el que Rodman me pregunta…”vas a pactar?”. Ni me lo había planteado dado que estaba concentrado, seguro de mi ventaja y sabía que me pagarían una mano fuerte (por eso yo era mejor que ellos…muy facil: MIS BLUFFS+MANOS FUERTES>MIS BLUFFS FALLIDOS+MIS CALLS A SUS MANOS FUERTES…con esta regla tan sencilla uno debe medir la efectividad de ser agresivo en una determinada mesa).

Propongo pactar puesto que la estructura era 9xx €, 500 € y 3xx €, ergo 5xx para cada uno si pactábamos, siendo el pacto>al 2º puesto..cosa muy interesante.

Y hasta aquí mi aventura en Peralada, torneo en el que deberéis averiguar qué pinta “el abuelo de vuestra mesa” en “vuestra mesa”.

Marvel Magic, los superhéroes se mezclan con el Magic

Un seguidor de este blog, aka Lobo, nos ha mandado un link a una noticia bastante curiosa. Resulta que unos fans de Marvel y jugadores de Magic han creado un juego nuevo que mezcla estos dos mundos fantásticos: Marvel Magic (sitio web oficial)

Una de las cosas que me ha gustado de esta iniciativa es que las cartas (o sus personajes) tienen realmente superpoderes xDDD

El juego está creado con el Magic Workstation Software y es totalmente gratuito. Podéis descargaros la edición revisada y unas expansiones en http://www.drstrange.nl/marvelmagic/index.htm

A partir de hoy iré publicando aquí los cómics que los chicos de Good Gamery publican de manera periódica en su blog. Las viñetas son anónimas y utilizan un estilo realmente cutre (dibujado con algo rollo “Paint” xD) pero tienen un humor bastante bueno en muchas ocasiones (ojo, no siempre xD).
