The day I met Dan Frazier

The day I met Dan Frazier

This is the story on How I met Dan Frazier, yesterday in Zaragoza (Where? Yes, Zaragoza). If you aren’t familiar with Dan Frazier, let me tell you that he’s the artist that drew the first Moxen. Well, he’s actually drawn lot more cards, including the 12% of the initial Alpha collection. You can check the full list of his artwork for WotC here and his website here.

So, everything started back in this year’s GP Madrid when we saw Jose “El Cubano” giving some fliers away. In those fliers it said something about a couple of tournaments and, surprisingly, that Dan Frazier was the guest artist at the event.

Arnau, Roger, Edu and I started to organize the trip to Zaragoza, and early in the morning our pimp ride started!

This was some of our stuff to be signed before we actually met Dan:

(Sorry for the bad quality of the picture)

It was really needed an Alpha/Beta P9 in order to get to travel with Arnau’s Mercedes :D

Anyways, once we arrived at Freakland Games in Zaragoza we discovered that Albert & Pedro and Paco and his girlfriend were faster than us, so we weren’t actually the first ones at the queue :( But that wasn’t the issue, as we had plenty of time to talk with Dan as there wasn’t that many people there in the end.

When Dan realized of Roger’s presence at the queue, his wife Cathy gave Roger a folder and when he opened it we were all impressed to find out that Dan Frazier had drawn a portrait of Roger wearing the harlequin hat from Jester’s Cap. Meet the IMPRESSIVE Roger’s Cap!

I can’t wait to see a full-res scan of the drawing!

This is my personal goodie bag for the day:

Let’s havea a closer look at everything :)

While in Freakland we played some Vintage games, enjoyed the awesome environment and had fun, lots of fun!

Around 18:45 we decided to go back to Barcelona because we still had something very important to do: Watch the FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid game of the millenium! If you are a soccer fan, then I’m sure you know that the spanish soccer league is incredibly crazy right now. I just have a picture to illustrate how the game went:

I’ll remember this day my whole life, for being the day I met Dan Frazier, having an excellent day with my friends, and Barça winning 0-2 against Real Madrid. Hope you guys liked the report.

Thanks for reading!

  • I’m sorry but those Moxen are now ruined, they look terrible. Nice report though.

  • The best part about art is, that it’s so subjective that it’s almost impossible to tell what’s beauty and what’s terrible. It always depends on the eyes of the observer. For instance, I consider some paintings from Kandinsky to be awesome while some other I think are terrible. Nevertheless, having a painting from Kandinsky is something very exclusive and unique, worth a lot of money. Same happens with my Moxen, which I consider super cool. I understand they look terrible to you, but still, they are unique and exclusive, and therefor worth a lot of money.

  • Meow_Mix:

Certainly, art is a matter of taste, but “good art” tends to be universally recognized as such. Across societies and nationalities there is generally a high degree of accord in terms of constitutes a “beautiful” form. Hence why consensus can be reached regarding Miss Universe and the Wonders of the World. That said, I think the playmat is awesome, but the altered moxes are just absolutely horrible. Moreover, I suspect that almost everyone will agree with that the altered artwork is awful. Yes, they are cool in the sense that they were personalized for you and that they now have an increased sentimental value for you because of that experience. Nevertheless, for a third party observers (like Jason, myself, and most others), they are criminally ruined and it is a shame. Dan Frazier is a great artist, but the alterations on the moxen are crap. In future, please ask the artist what they have in mind for alterations before they set to work because, in this case, the result was an artistic disaster.

  • Gus Schade (yawg07):

I think the moxen are pretty badass, myself.
I don’t like the Jet as much (painting on the jet itself) but man I think they are pretty rockin.

  • WOOOOOOOOO:

cool mat just need more stuff on the left of it

altered mox are definitely unique to say the least

pics of pizzero are kinda pimp i guess

  • Francesco Comeback:

Not able to come in Zaragoza but really interested not for T1 stuff but for my personal Sedge Troll collection!

After this event, r u able to find me some European Limited or Alpha Beta Signed/Altered Sedge Troll?

    .. oh yes also a summer one… :)

P.s.: my address is the same of msn, add it!

  • Eduard:

Sure Pizzero, they are exclusive !!! Tonight I’m gonna shit on all my moxen, so they are all exclusive, too…. :(

Anyway, the playmat is awesome !!!

  • JACO:

Those Moxes rock Jordi! You have to get all of your cards signed and altered…slowly.

  • Eduard, go ahead.

Francesco, I know at least one person who has a Beta Signed Sedge Troll. The only problem is that I believe it’s from his Beta Collection. I’ll keep my eyes opened for the euro limited trolls.

    Cheers!

  • ceccorocket:

    awesome p9, Jordi…
i appreciate the uniqueness and the alterations of the moxes..
I hope to see them live soon..
    ciao!

  • eduardoblinking:

    Jordi,

The travel experience with Dan has been amazing, the truth is that I will always keep it deep inside my memory.

Dan and his wife seemed to be very kind and lovely people.

The moxes you have now are the most exclusive.

Please, send me by email my pic with Dan, I would love to have it.

Everytime I see my playmat with the goblins I get exited, thanks for having realized that it was meant to be owned by eduardoblinking.

    Greetings,

    Edu

  • Eduard:

Sorry Jordi for being so direct on my last post. Even I don’t share the PIMP fever, I understand that altered / signed cards are more valuable / exclusive than the ‘normal’ ones.
But I must say that alterations on cards should have a minimum of style. By drawing some weird lines around the moxen don’t make them look better (although the clock on the Jet is great). IMHO.

  • gRR!!:

Francesco Comeback, I have a Beta Signed Sedge Troll since Saturday, but as piZZero said, is for my Beta collection, so it’s not on sale. Sorry!

piZZero: I really like your Moxen. In some way they make my eyes bleed, but I like them anyway. I can’t explain better.

  • MonS:

thax jordi for the wonderful report and the great photos !!!!

yeah art is something like extremely personal….so that are YOUR moxes, and if you like them, that’s great.

I like the moxes ’cause they are an unique piace…..it’s the only altered bb playset I have ever seen,so they are just great pimpness :) .

But the best is the playmat ; one of the best I have ever seen :) .

    your playmat rocks,jordi. ;)

  • LazZo:

I went to Zgz to play the legacy tournament on Sunday and I found Dan Frazier is a lovely Santa Claus who shared an smile with everybody there even though we were just around 40 players…

Roger’s portrait is PRICELESS and you playmat is awesome, I wanted to ask him for another one for me but my wallet said something like: “Ehm… you’d better not do it”. Maybe next time, Cathy told me she loves Spain and comes around sometimes, speaking her good Spanish.

About the moxen, I find Mox Jet’s alteration kinda funny but I agree with some guys around here the rest of them need need an overdose of subjectivity… Just like those Beta Underground Seas by Rob Alexander you posted some time ago… Anyway, nice report =)

  • Waw! Seems like you guys had a great trip :D those moxen look sweet! And a signet super tecret tech, awesome! :D

  • Thanks!

It was a great trip indeed! I hope to meet Dan some day again. He’s still a young one!
